Malan was one of Churchill’s original ‘few’ who fought the Luftwaffe to a standstill during the Battle of Britain where he scored 18 kills and helped revolutionise RAF tactics. Before joining up in 1937 Malan had served in the merchant Navy gaining the ‘Sailor’ nickname which stuck with him throughout the war. A fine tactician, his war end tally was 27 enemy aircraft.
